Schedule for the Week of December 13 - December 18

In looking at the schedule for next week it appears that we are trying to use every waking moment for school activities.   Between after school meetings and home basketball games it should be a busy week.  Throw in the vocal music concert on Thursday night and I could just as well move my bed and clothes over to my office.  I hope there is a good game on this week for Monday night football as that might be my only night to enjoy television.  Anyway, enough complaining...Here is my schedule:

Pearl Harbor Day

As a former History Teacher December 7th was always a day when no matter where we were in the history book, we had to stop and talk about Pearl Harbor and World War II.

Like most history teachers,( or at least most history teachers who coached) I loved teaching about wars.  I suppose because wars are easy to teach about since so much material is available. Anyway, I always felt that I did a good job teaching about Pearl Harbor and World War II...until now...

Looking back (with almost 25 years of hind sight) I realize how lousy a job I was really doing.  If only I had opened my eyes to the wealth of living, breathing resources that we had available to us.....resources that unfortunately, we are losing every single day.

A couple of weeks ago we had a gentleman, who was actually on a ship at Pearl Harbor on December 7th, come to the school to speak to our students !!  What a treasure he was....I hope our students realize how lucky they were to hear about this historical event from an eye witness.

I've also have the pleasure to belong to the local Lion's Club with a gentleman who not only fought in World War II but spent time in a German prison camp...again, a wonderful man who even with everything he's been through continues to give back to his community....Thanks Bill.

Today, my daughter sent me a copy of a story that appeared in the Sioux Falls newspaper about several gentleman from South Dakota who fought in World War II...the main interviewee is a man named Harold Thune who I had the pleasure of teaching with for a couple of years back in the early 1980's before he retired. Harold's is an amazing story...as he left a basketball scholarship at the University of Minnesota to join the war effort and went on to shoot down four enemy planes in a single day.  He also happens to be the father of a U.S. Senator. If only I had been smart enough to use all of my available resources back then.....how much richer my students learning would have been if I had only utilized Mr. Thune in my history class...Harold thanks for your service to this country...it's an honor to know you!!

Hope that you enjoy the story:

Happy Thanksgiving from Les, Herb and the Big Guy!!

Like most people I have certain shows that I love to watch that are just associated with a season.

It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown for Halloween

Charlie Brown Christmas, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, It's a Wonderful Life.....

You get the picture......certain shows are associated with a holiday season to me.

For Thanksgiving it's not the Macy Day Parade or football that gets me in the mood for turkey...it's a memorable episode from a great old sitcom,

WKRP in Cincinnati

Some people remember WKRP because it was the show that first brought us Loni Anderson (not a bad thing to remember really!!) but I always think of turkeys when I hear the theme song...and I always have to laugh.

Happy Thanksgiving to all my favorite turkeys!!

Thank You for Supporting the Arts

On behalf of the Audubon Community School I want to take this opportunity to thank all those who made generous donations to our lighting project in the school’s auditorium.  For those of you who were able to attend our recent three-act play and vocal music concerts the new stage lighting system greatly increased the production values of each of these performances.  For the first time in many years audience members were able to see the smiling faces of their favorite performers in lighting that enhanced each production.
The final steps in this project will take place over Christmas break after which all features of the new system can be utilized.  Needless to say, without local people and organizations raising a little over $23,000 in donated funds this $34,000 project would not have become a reality.  Just another example of the outstanding support the school receives from the patrons of the Audubon Community School for our arts program.  Our students are truly blessed due to your support!
The lighting system was just the first of a series of upgrades that the school is planning on making to the auditorium.  As the only performing arts facility in Audubon County, and with the large number of students actively involved in the performing arts at Audubon Community School, the School Board and the school administration feel that it’s imperative that we not only maintain our auditorium but work to improve it for student performers and patrons.
Our next project, tentatively set for the summer of 2011, is to replace our stage curtains.  Although the curtains themselves are only twelve to fifteen years old, the hardware used in the operation of the curtains is mostly original equipment from 1964.  This project is estimated to cost around $20,000. Future projects include replacing the seating and upgrading the sound system. Once again, the school will actively be looking for donors to partner with to make these projects a reality.  If you are interested in assisting in these projects with a donation of either time or money please contact my office.
Sincerely Yours,

Brett Gibbs
Superintendent

Veteran's Day

On Thursday, November 11th I had the honor of introducing the guest speaker for our annual Veteran's Day program.  As I sat looking at the audience, I was amazed by how much our students seemed to be into the program....reciting the Pledge, singing God Bless America......not acting like they were just glad to be getting out of Algebra class (flashing back to my school days) but legitimately behaving like it was an honor for them to be there honoring our special guests, the veterans.

Then, as I performed my last duty as part of the ceremony, reading a list of names of area men and women who are either currently deployed or will be deployed shortly overseas, it occurred to me why the students seemed so involved with the program.

These students, as young as they are, have been touched by war.  Sadly, most of them can hardly remember a time when our country wasn't involved in a war.  As I read down the list it struck me how emotionally involved our students, and the Audubon community, were with the war on terrorism.

Those names that I was reading were the names of brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, sons and daughters of the people sitting in front of me and that realization hit me very hard.

Now, I'm not one to show a lot of emotion (like most guys I guess) I mean, of course I got misty eyed when Jim Brown died at the end of the Dirty Dozen and I was pretty chocked up when Kevin Costner got to play a game of catch with his dad at the end of Field of Dreams and what guy didn't shed a tear when Rudy finally got to play for Notre Dame. But other than that I'm usually pretty stoic.

But as I worked my way down the list I found my throat getting tighter as I announced each name, the name of a kid who a few years earlier was probably sitting in the crowd at one of these programs. I realized that these students, my students, had an emotional connection with each and every name.

Then I reached a name about halfway down the list that only one person in the gym had an emotional attachment too.  But for that person, the meaning of Veteran's Day will change forever....Thank you William, for serving this great country of ours!!  Your mom and I love you and pray for you everyday

Thank you to all Veteran's for your service to our country....you deserve more than one day a year.

I Hate to Say Anything But.........

Since the major league baseball playoffs are in full swing (pun intended) I thought that they would serve as a perfect backdrop for this update to my blog.

Baseball is full of superstition and quirky unwritten rules that have evolved over the long, rich history of the game.  One of those superstitions/rules is that when a pitcher has a no-hitter or perfect game going no one on his team is suppose to point that out....or even talk to him for that matter!!

The premise is, "if you talk about it, something bad will happen."

If a team mate points out that the other team doesn't have a hit yet, then the next batter will get a hit...if it's a perfect game and someone talks about it on the bench, then the next batter will reach base some way, some how.

Stupid?  Definitely!!

True? Well, anybody whose ever played the game will swear that it's true and they can cite several examples of the "jinx" ruining a great pitching performance!

So I might be tempting the fates! violating the rules! thumbing my nose at the gods! but......"aren't we having some beautiful fall weather?"

There it is!!  I can hear the gasp from here!!  The look of panic on every old ballplayers face!!  I mentioned the great weather so that can mean only one thing........SNOW!!
Forget the National Weather Service, forget the Weather Channel, heck, forget the Farmer's Almanac....I've just put the hex on the perfect fall we've been having!!

It had to happen!!  I needed to get my information out concerning winter weather and snow days....I put it off for as long as I dare, but it had to be done.

Once again the Audubon Community School will be using "School Alert," as our primary source to get news and information out to our patrons concerning weather related announcements.(along with the local radio stations in Carrol, Atlantic and Harlan and the Des Moines TV stations) On this blog (upper left hand corner under Superintendent's links) you will find a link that will allow you to sign up for this service.  You have the option of being notified by email, text message or both whenever the school places an announcement on the site.  This allows you to be notified no matter whether your at home, work or on the road when winter weather strikes. If you have never signed up before please use the link to do so...if you have used School Alert in the past you shouldn't have to do a thing. (unless of course your email or cellphone number or carrier has changed)

So click on the link and sign up today because the spell has been broken; the hex is on, and bad weather is just around the corner!!

Friday, October 8, 2010

Schedule for the week of October 11 - October 16

Here's my plan...instead of putting out my weekly schedule through email like I usually do.  I'll place it on my new webpage so that people will need to log on to my site to read it.....that will cause an increase in the traffic to my website!!  Advertisers will see that increase (as servers world wide slow down!!) and will want to advertise on my site.  At first I will say no, claiming that its a public service, that its for the good of the students...you know, taking the high road.  But eventually, when the offers reach six figures, I'll sell out and let them put pop-ups on my blog site.  Then I'll retire and enjoy the good life.....a man and his dreams!!

Making the Switch

Now that I have discovered Google, specifically Google Blogger, I realized that I needed to switch my Superintendent blog from Edublogger to Google.  It is just so much easier to use...plus I can manage both of my blogs (that's right I have two now!!) from the same site.

My only concern is whether or not all of my followers from my old edublogger site will be able to follow me to my new site.  I mean I have my wife, my daughter..maybe one of my four sisters and......well anyway I have three followers who I think would miss me if I suddenly stopped blogging....although my wife and daughter could stop worrying about me embarrassing them on the Internet every time they see a new post from me.

I do think that since both of my blogs (did I mention that I now have two!) will be on the same site I will update them more frequently and since Blogger is so easy to use, I hope to be able to add more pictures and video to make my site more interesting (less of my dribble to read equals more interesting blog site)

Let me think about this.....now, instead of fretting over what I should write, I also have to worry about what pictures/video I should put on my blog.....maybe this switch isn't such a good idea after all.
